Dye Happy

Packaging Design + Product Photography

Dye Happy is small business in Harrisonburg, Virginia run by the one and only Tie Dye Dan specializing in tie dye clothing and embroidery. I met Dan through the kendama community and he has sponsored me as a professional kendama player for 5 years.

For this project, Dan had me shoot product photography and design the packaging for a new line of bamboo kendamas. I wanted to showcase the vibrant colors of the kendama by using a black backdrop for the photography. I made sure to capture the main features of the kendamas including the beautiful design and logo on the tama (ball) as well as the base cup hole for improved lunar balance, and bearing to cut down on string winding. For the packaging, I again wanted to highlight the design elements on the tama and the different colorways available as well as use it as an opportunity to have multiple boxes connect to continue the repeating wave design. I created and presented Dan with two concepts for the packaging graphics for him to choose from and we refined the elements and copy from there.
