Journal Report

layout design + print production

This journal report is a book I created for a print and finishing course at WWU. I was assigned an articled titled, “African American Artists Are More Visible Than Ever. So Why Are Museums Giving Them Short Shrift?” from Artnet News. The project was to take the online article and redesign the layout to be printed into the form of a booklet.

Seeing that the content of the article touches on important issues regarding African American artists, I wanted to make sure my design and layout did not distract from the information. In turn, I kept things simple with a consistent layout that was broken every couple pages to provide a visual break. A great example of these visual breaks are the images that bleed off the page and disrupt the otherwise consistent layout. I want to note that none of the written content or images were created by me. I did design the layout of the information and images as well as the data visualizations seen in the second image. I also printed the book and bound it with a thin piece of heavy black paper to give it a more professional feel.
